How to Help Your Landscape Beat the Summer Heat

There’s no avoiding it—summer is about to bring the heat to Southern Nevada. And while we’re in for some long, hot days and nights ahead, there are ways you can keep your landscape healthy even during the hottest days of the year.

As temperatures increase, you may be tempted to overwater. But keep in mind that your plants and trees can stay vibrant and healthy—and add colorful curb appeal to your property—with proper irrigation, even when the heat is at its peak.

With the community’s mandatory summer watering restrictions in effect from May 1 through Aug. 31, follow these tips to maintain your landscape’s health and vitality while efficiently using water and managing your water bill:

Follow a recommended four-day-a-week schedule for drip-irrigated trees and plants, watering 30 to 90 minutes once per watering day.
As temperatures rise and weather conditions dictate, slowly “ramp up” the number of days you water per week. Add additional watering days if your plants and trees need them.
Water grass with sprinklers for a maximum of 12 minutes per watering day, set in three four-minute cycles, spaced one hour apart. That’s all your grass needs.
Grass can be watered up to six days a week in summer; Sunday watering is not allowed year-round. However, just because you can water more, it doesn't mean your grass needs it. Slowly ramp up the number of watering days as weather conditions warrant.

Sprinkler irrigation is prohibited between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. during the summer months, when water can be lost to intense heat and high winds. And remember—watering during prohibited hours or allowing water to spray or flow off your property could result in a costly water-waste fine (and nobody wants that).
